    Cunneen hosts town hall meeting Aug. 2

    Assemblyman Jim Cunneen is holding an open house on Aug. 2, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Residents can ask questions about the state budget, pending legislation or any other questions Cunneen can help answer.     WGNA is back in session after break

    The Willow Glen Neighborhood Association will resume its regular meeting schedule on Aug. 9, at 7 p.m. at the Willow Glen United Methodist Church, on the corner of Minnesota and Newport avenues. WGNA was in recess through July but is ready to get back to work. The public is invited to attend the neighborhood meeting.     Walk San Jose names new board of directors

    Walk San Jose, the organization that says it wants to give feet a chance in this booming city, has established its founding 16-member board of directors.

    Members of the board include Vern Ladd, who also sits on the board of the Willow Glen Neighborhood Association. Other members include President Jill Escher, Vice President Russell Westbrook, Secretary Holly Latta, Treasurer Stephen Ferro, Pilar Arquero, Gladwyn diSouza, Jesus Flores, Don Gadliardi, Diane Gonzales, Mary McDonald, Chuck Reed, Rik Rosenlund, Jill Wirtjes and Debra Yantis.

    Walk San Jose's next meeting is Sept. 26, at 6:30 p.m. at the King Main Library, McDaniel Room. Special guest speaker will be Hans Larsen of San Jose Department of Public Works. Larsen will discuss one-way couplets (one-way streets that parallel one another in opposite directions) and other San Jose projects.

    Reading program has volunteer openings

    Santa Clara Library Reading Program is looking for literacy volunteers.

    Throughout September, the organization will hold volunteer orientation sessions that give an overview of the program and describe the role of tutors and volunteers.

    The program exists to provide free, basic literacy instruction and support to English-speaking adults in the county.

    There are volunteer opportunities in community literacy, family literacy, correctional facilities and recovery house programs. For more information, call 408.262.1349.

    Special Olympics orientation is Aug. 8

    The Special Olympics chapter of Santa Clara County needs volunteers for its fall season. Special athletes need training for soccer, long-distance running and power lifting. Coaches are needed for an eight-week period for each of the 12 sports in the year-round program. No experience is necessary to coach. The volunteer orientation is Aug. 8, at 7 p.m., at the Special Olympics office. For information, call 408.267.2734, or visit www.sonc.org/sccso.

    Guadalupe park and gardens hosts tours

    Discover what thrives in San Jose on Aug. 5, during a tour of Guadalupe River Park and Gardens. A docent-led walking tour of the gardens will run from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Participants will be able to learn the history of the river, see how flood control works, tour the gardens and check out some of San Jose's public art pieces.
