San Jose Elks Lodge visits the hometown of Mickey Mouse

Members of the San Jose Elks Lodge No. 522, located in Willow Glen, were in Anaheim last week, but they had more on their minds than a visit to Disneyland.

Lodge president Wayne L. Leslie was among those who attended the Elks' 134th national convention, highlights of which included speeches by the two overall winners of the Elks National Free Throw Competition, Adam James Morgan, 13, of Cumberland, Md., and Mary Hall Mc Arver, 13, of Gastonia, N.C. The two were judged the best of more than 3 million kids across the nation.

Also honored were the winners of the Elks National Foundation's "Most Valuable Student" annual scholarship contest. Ellen Johnson of Dixie, Utah, and Jonathan Taliaferro of El Dorado, Kansas, will both receive four-year, $30,000 scholarships.

The Elks have a long tradition of charitable service, such as sponsoring cancer research, youth programs and veterans-service programs. At the convention, C. Valentine Bates, the Elks' national president-elect, encouraged lodge members to deepen their commitment to those in need.
