The Willow Glen ResidentCaltrain ridership reaches new high"More and more people heading to work are opting to leave the driving to Caltrain," said San Mateo County Supervisor Mike Nevin, chair of the Caltrain policy board, and that is music to his ears. Caltrain transported more than 8.6 million people during the 1997-98 fiscal year, an increase in ridership of more than 7.6 percent from the year before, when roughly 8 million commuters rode the train. Since 1978, Nevin says, ridership has increased from about 4.5 million, an overall jump of more than 92 percent. Caltrain expects the steady increases to continue, due to the commuter rail line's connections with the light rail systems in Santa Clara County and San Francisco. Caltrain operates 66 trains each weekday between San Jose and San Francisco, with commute-hour service south to Gilroy.
