Mayor declares Aug. 1 Night Out in San Jose

San Jose Mayor Ron Gonzales declared Aug. 1, National Night Out in San Jose. About 93 neighborhoods across the city held gatherings as a way to call for reducing crime in their neighborhoods.

According to the San Jose Police Department, residents throughout the nation turn on their porch lights and visit with neighbors once every year as part of an effort to heighten crime prevention awareness, strengthen neighborhood spirit and increase police-community relations.

Amy Lang, from the SJPD Crime Prevention unit, says most neighborhoods hosted events with 20 to 30 people and some attracted up to 400 neighbors.

She says the neighborhood gatherings are welcomed as a way for patrol officers to stop by the neighborhood and meet residents. Lang says this is the 17th National Night Out across the country, and the 10th year San Jose has celebrated the event.
