District undertakes environmental study to prepare for Broadway move

    By Jessica Lyons

Forging ahead despite neighborhood opposition, the San Jose Unified School District recently completed the initial study in the California Environmental Quality Act process, and determined that relocating Broadway High to John Muir Middle School's campus will not have any major environmental impact.

The CEQA requires that public agencies conduct environmental reviews of any projects that may have an adverse environmental effect.

According to the initial study, preventive measures--including stopping construction during first- and second-stage smog alerts, daily site watering and limited construction time--will control potentially harmful adverse effects.

The CEQA public comment period has been extended to Aug. 16, and will be reviewed by the Board of Education on Sept. 2. A public meeting will be held Aug. 18 at John Muir Middle School before the Board adopts the CEQA report.

"Part of what [the board] will review is the CEQA study and all of the comments including the notes of the public meeting," says Maureen Davidson, a spokesperson for the school district. "If anything is uncovered by the public comment, there will be a further study, but if the CEQA study proves to have been comprehensive, and if no further facts are uncovered or questions arise that demand review, the board is expected to adopt the study on September 2."

The project description and preliminary site map of the proposed Broadway move to Branham Lane and Speak Street are posted on the district's website (www.sjusd.k12.ca.us). The complete 77-page document, including attachments, is available to the public in the General Services Office of the SJUSD, 855 Lenzen Ave., and at the reference desk of the Pearl Avenue branch of the San Jose Public Library, 4207 Pearl Ave.
