    Pet First Aid Course

Pet owners will get the chance to learn first aid for their Spots and Fluffys.

The Santa Clara Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross is offering a Pet First Aid Class this week to help area pet owners prepare for their animals' medical emergencies. Participants practice on life-size pet manikins to learn to check pulses, give chest compressions and control bleeding. They also learn about pet vital signs, how to immobilize broken bones, respond to choking and signs of poisoning.

The class is scheduled Oct. 17 at the chapter, 2731 N. First St. Registration is $30. For more information or to register for the class, call 408.577.2179 or visit www.redcross.org/ca/scv.

Prune roses and eat ice cream at gardens

The Guadalupe River Park and Gardens is inviting the public to help prune the rose bushes at its San Jose Heritage Rose Garden this week.

The park, at Taylor and Spring streets, has a diverse collection of roses with more than 3,700 rose varieties, but after blooming in early spring the dead blooms need to be removed so they will blossom again sooner.

"We want to have continuous blooms," education coordinator Kary Wilson said. "The faster you get them off there, the faster the plant wants to make a new bloom."

Adults are encouraged to bring clippers and gloves to be guided by volunteer experts, and everyone will be treated to ice cream sundaes.

For more information about the rose pruning and to sign up, call Lucy Perez at 408.298.7657 or visit www.grpg.org.
