Three WG businesses offer health and beauty

Two are new and one is remodeled to give WG residents beauty and skin therapies

Willow Glen's Lincoln Avenue now boasts two new and one refurbished massage parlor business that specialize in massage and other therapies and skin, hair and nail treatments.

The Esprit Healing Center, 1058 Lincoln Ave., opened last December to offer a variety of services, including chiropractic and homeopathy, acupuncture, massage therapy, facials and psychology referrals. It is open between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and offers chiropractic and acupuncture on Saturdays.

"The whole idea is to have a holistic clinic where you have all the things for a person's inner and outer well-being in one center," said co-owner Anita Mascarotti. "But it's more focused on the practitioner side with massage and facial sort of secondary."

Anita and her husband, Robert Mascarotti, previously owned a similar center located near the Westfield Shopping Center in San Jose. Robert practices chiropractic and homeopathy and has been working in the area since 1987.

People generally come to the center to receive either the physical or the beauty treatments, said Anita, but the practitioners will refer their clients to each other to address specific problems.

"The whole idea is they work in a team," she said.

Mascarotti said she has seen an increasing number of businesses that cater to the growing interest in alternative and holistic approaches to health, especially on Lincoln Avenue.

Full-service salon, Vanity, 1275 Lincoln Ave., suite 3B, held its grand opening July 28 and reintroduced two familiar faces on the avenue, co-owners Joan Evans and Laura Ruggiero.

The two worked as a skin care specialist and hair stylist, respectively, for two years at Peninsula Beauty Supply across Lincoln Avenue.

"We wanted to offer our clients a nicer place to be," Evans said of their decision to strike out on their own. "We were ready to be business owners."

Like Peninsula Beauty, the new business is a rental salon and allows the service providers to set their own hours and charge their own rates, Evans said. Janine Batinich also does hair styling and they hope to offer a third hair stylist soon. They are still looking for someone to do manicures, although they do have a pedicurist, she said.

A big attraction for Vanity is its massage therapist, Angela Hough, who is well-known among those who are in-the-know. She also works at the Pebble Beach Golf Course, Evans said. She works at Vanity Wednesday through Saturday.

Most of Vanity's clients are from Willow Glen, and both Evans and Ruggiero live in Willow Glen, she said.

Another familiar Willow Glen business got a new look last month. Violet Johnson's Wellness Spa opened July 10 in its new location at 1345 Lincoln Ave., previously the Panache store. It had been in Willow Glen at 1314 Lincoln Ave. for two years, and before that was in Campbell for 10, owner Violet Johnson said.

"There's such a popularity at the moment in calling spas, 'spas,'" she said. "We call it a 'wellness spa' because we go more in-depth."

At the Wellness Spa, each client is interviewed to determine his or her specific needs and then receives appropriate treatment, tailored to meet those needs, Johnson said.

The business specializes in anti-aging treatments, such as facials, peels and microdermabrasions, that both exfoliate dead skin. It offers treatments for hyperpigmentation and customized makeup formulas, as well as stress-reduction therapies, such as massage and hypnotherapy. Classes that teach infant massage to parents are also offered.

Johnson said she hopes to offer a class for teenage girls to educate them on skin care, nutrition and makeup, and a similar class for older women who may need to learn new ways of caring for aging skin.

The center is open Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with special appointments on Sundays. Facials cost between $85 and $120; stress reduction, between $65 and $95; teen classes, $35 per session, with a $10 gift certificate; and adult classes, $45 per session, with a $15 gift certificate.

Johnson said she will be showing off the new location at an open house on Sept. 30 from 2 to 6 p.m., with music, refreshments and a raffle.
