    Camps created from generous donation

The Larry L. Hillblom Foundation has donated $209,000 to the Diabetes Society of Santa Clara Valley. The donation will go to support the society's camping program in the Central California Valley. The money will create three new camps: the Larry L. Hillblom Children's Diabetes Camp, a seven-day residential camp for children ages 6-13; and two weekend camps. The donation will also support Camp DJ. All camps are held in the mountains of the Sequoia National Park at Sequoia Lake.

The foundation is funded through a bequest from Larry L. Hillblom, an international businessman and one of the three founders of DHL Worldwide Express. Substantial amounts of the foundation's funding are used to support medical research in the areas of diabetes mellitus and diseases associated with aging and children's developmental disorders.

The gift is the largest in the history of the Diabetes Society of Santa Clara Valley. The society held a recognition service on July 19 at Sequoia Lake to thank foundation members.

The first Hillblom Family camp will be held in October. For more information or to sign up, call the Diabetes Society at 800.969.1165.

Nonprofit agencies have Nov. deadline to apply for funding

Nov. 1 is the deadline for nonprofit organizations to apply for a total of $30,000 in grants available from the Community Response Fund of the Junior League of San Jose Inc.

Individual agencies will be awarded funding up to $7,500.

Applicants must have a local board of directors, operate within the geographical boundaries of the league, have 501(c) (3) tax-exempt status and may not have received league funds the previous year.
