Memorial art project to be dedicated at Willow Glen Library
The Helen Owen Memorial Art Tile project has been in the works at the Willow Glen Library since January 1999. Owen, who died in 1993, was loved and admired by children at the library.
On Aug. 19, at 11 a.m., residents from the Willow Glen Beatification project and Friends of the Willow Glen Library will dedicate the colorful memorial. A reception, sponsored by the Willow Glen Neighborhood Association, will follow.
Owen served as the first business manager of the Willow Glen Business and Professional Association. She was a member for eight years. The project recognizes Owen's love for books and children.
The tile mural was designed by the children. Volunteers did the excavation, including concrete pad pouring and tile setting. Nina Koepcke, the artist in charge, said the mural tiles are all illustrated with rabbit scenes from children's literature. "She loved rabbits, and often called her children her 'rabbits,' " Koepcke said.
The Willow Glen Library is located at 1157 Minnesota Ave. For more information, call 408.998.2053.

San Jose Beautiful is searching for homes and businesses
Nominate a neighbor--or any newly improved home or business throughout the city for San Jose Beautiful's Home Improvement Award Program. SJB is searching for applicants for this year's second round of Home Improvement Awards.
The home improvement awards are designed to honor home and business owners who have improved the outside appearance of their property. The awards will be presented by Mayor Ron Gonzales and city council members in November.
Winners receive a plaque, recognition by the Mayor and city council and are invited to a reception in their honor.
The program is sponsored by Southern Lumber, Almaden Valley Nursery, Garden City Construction and the City of San Jose.
"Beautifying San Jose is the focus of San Jose Beautiful," says HIA Chairwoman Rebecca Elliot. "We are thrilled to have another opportunity to join with the mayor and city council to recognize the hard work done by so many home- and business owners throughout our city." "Our goal is to see HIA plaques on homes in every neighborhood in San Jose, and we invite those who are fixing up their homes or businesses to apply."
There is no application fee to apply. Call 408.277.5208 for information or an application packet.
