The San Jose Rotary Club is looking for volunteers to work in its Rotacare free clinics. Rotacare is a health service through which Rotary and non-Rotary members provide basic medical care to the uninsured working poor, the homeless, and migrant workers and their families without charge.
The San Jose Rotary Club provides these medical services at Washington School on Oak Street in San Jose. The clinic is open from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays. The Rotary needs volunteers for a few evening hours a month. Call 408.947.3313 for more information.
Mural adds color to shelter dining room
The Little Orchard Café of the Emergency Housing Consortium's flagship program site, the James F. Boccardo Regional Reception Center in Willow Glen, recently received and installed a mural that depicts the Santa Clara Valley during the time the area was known as the Valley of Heart's Delight.
The mural, 47 by 10 feet, was created by more than 20 students from Pioneer High School and took two school years to complete. The mural was designed by Pioneer student Veronica Graham and incorporates many physical features of the valley, with historical figures from the art world dining at café tables set into the scene.
The Emergency Housing Consortium, located in Willow Glen, is the valley's largest provider of shelter and services for homeless people, serving more than 12, 000 people each year. The nonprofit agency operates emergency shelters, transitional and permanent housing sites, youth programs and family centers from Sunnyvale to Gilroy.

Representatives from the 62 nonprofits received funding and recognition at an awards ceremony on July 25.
