Lawrence, Goodman are open-water winners

By Dick Sparrer

It's a sight you don't see often--in fact, it's only legal once every year--but there will be swimmers in the waters of Lexington Reservoir this weekend. The event is the Catfish Swim II, and it's scheduled for the waters of Lexington on Aug. 30. The aquatics adventure is part of the Red Bull Bay Area Open Water Swim Series.

The Catfish Swim will begin at 9 a.m., and swimmers will compete in 1.2- and 2.4-mile events. There will also be a 2.4-mile, two-person relay. Wetsuits are allowed.

The course will run counterclockwise around Lexington and will be marked by large neon buoys. The event will feature a water start and a land finish.

The registration fee is $35 on race day (relay teams add $5). Race day registration begins at 7:30 a.m.

The Catfish Swim follows a similar event held earlier this month, when swimmers got their only legal opportunity to dive into the waters of Stevens Creek Reservoir in the Guppy Get-Together II.

Cameron Lawrence and Jindra Goodman of San Jose were among the age group winners in the 1.2-mile swim at Stevens Creek that included swimmers in wetsuit and "skin" divisions.

Lawrence breezed to a victory in the men's 30-39 age group, with John Schmitz second and Shawn Dehpanah third, and Annette Chinn was the women's winner in the age group, with Heidi Dartez of San Jose second.

Goodman was the women's 50-59 champ, with Mary Gorman second, and Walter Weaver took the men's 50-59 title, with Ron Griswuld second, Tom Davies of Saratoga third and Geoff Capell of San Jose fourth.

Brian Williams finished first in the boys' 19-and-under division, with Ben Vargas second, Scott Bannon of Los Gatos third and Matt Vargas fourth.

Frances Hodge was the girls' 19-and-under winners, with Kelly Capell of San Jose second.

Joshua Woodruff took the men's 20-29 title, with Jeff Schubert second.

Marisa Hilderbrand won the women's 20-29 group, with Andrea Goodman second, Deborah Topp third, Brynna Donn fourth and Marfa Kay Weathers of San Jose fifth.

Sue Reeves cruised to a victory in the women's 40-49 class, with Pam Bosnyak of San Jose second, Rosemarie Beckman third and Ellen Buzawa of San Jose fourth. Steve Wallace won the men's crown.

Ann Lambertson won the women's 60-and-over title.

Bryan Beckman was the top finisher overall in the wetsuit competition. Neil Solomon of Los Gatos was 14th in the division, with Bruce Maxwell of San Jose 15th.

Dana Hunter was the women's wetsuit winner, with Janet Heldt of San Jose eighth and Clair Linder of San Jose 11th.

John Sheldon was the men's "skin" winner, and Susie Grant was the women's winner.
