New Safeway has its grand opening

A bigger and better Safeway Food and Drug opened on the corner of Hamilton and Meridian avenues in Willow Glen on Aug. 25. The old Safeway next door will be demolished to make room for more parking, according to assistant manager Michelle Pospisnek.

Pospisnek says the increased number of families in the area and their need for variety led to the new market, which features a pharmacy, bakery, seafood department and full customer-service center--amenities the old Safeway lacked.

The new store boasts 25,000 additional square feet and, as soon as the demolition occurs, it will have more than double the parking.

"This store is 12 years in the making," Pospisnek says.

Two-alarm fire in WG damages condo

San Jose firefighters were called out to battle a two-alarm fire in Willow Glen on Aug. 24. No one was injured in the fire, which was confined to the roof of a two-story condominium at 1606 Sparkling Way.

SJ Fire Department spokesman Tom Sculley said the fire began at 11:15 a.m. and was under control at 12:15 p.m.

Investigators say the fire was accidental, possibly having an electrical source, and caused an estimated $40,000 in damage.
