Caltrain will operate trains on Labor Day

Caltrain's commuter trains will operate on a holiday schedule on Labor Day, Sept. 7.

The commuter rail line will operate 18 trains between San Jose and San Francisco. However, there will be no train service south of the Tamien station in San Jose.

Weekend passes, which can be purchased for $9, will be valid for unlimited rides on Caltrain throughout Labor Day weekend, Sept. 5-7.

Green Party candidate to speak in the Glen

In preparation for the Nov. 3 elections, Sara Amir, the Green Party's candidate for lieutenant governor, will speak at a reception in Willow Glen to support her campaign. The event will be held at the Community Center at 1540 Hicks Ave. on Sunday, Sept. 13, from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Amir graduated from the University of Southern California in 1976 with a master's degree in environmental engineering. She believes strongly in environmental protection and is currently a supervising hazardous-substances scientist for the state Department of Toxic Substances Control. She has also served on the state Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity Committee, in support of the affirmative-action law.

Donate blood and go to Circus Vargas

The American Red Cross Blood Services in San Jose is giving everyone who registered to donate blood during the month of August two free tickets to the Circus Vargas at the Santa Clara County Fair. The local circus will be performing at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds Sept. 3-13.

Red Cross spokeswoman Heather Aiello said that "the circus is a great way for our donors to celebrate their blood donation."

To donate blood, one must be at least 17 years old, weigh 110 pounds or more and be in good health. For more information or to make an appointment, call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE.
