The Willow Glen ResidentSports BriefsUSTA Sectionals Six teams from the Santa Clara Valley advanced to the finals of the USTA League Tennis Northern California Sectional championships in Carmel Valley, and two of the six squads will now advance to the nationals. Almaden Valley Athletic Club of San Jose and the Decathlon Club of Santa Clara will each send teams to national competition. The AVAC women's 5.0 team beat Davie Stadium of Oakland 2-1 in the finals and will now play in the nationals Sept. 24-27 in New York City. The Decathlon men's 3.5 squad downed the San Francisco Tennis Club 5-0 to earn a place in the national finals Oct. 8-11 in Palm Springs. Las Palmas of Sunnyvale, Courtside of Los Gatos, the San Jose Swim & Racquet Club and Mountain View each pushed teams into the finals in Carmel Valley, but each one lost in the championship round. San Jose lost a 3-2 heartbreaker to Reno Tennis Club in the women's 4.0 finals, and Courtside dropped a tight 3-2 decision to Pacifica in the women's 3.5 title match. The Las Palmas men's 3.0 team dropped a tough 3-2 nod to the Napa Valley Tennis Association, and Mountain View lost 3-2 to Dan Gamel of Fresno in the men's 4.0 finals. Flag Football Signups are now under way for the seven-game flag football season that begins Sept. 19 and is sponsored by the city of San Jose. Games will be played at Camden Park. Special Olympics The Santa Clara County Special Olympics organization needs volunteers for the upcoming training and competition season. Special Olympics, now in its 30th year, needs volunteers to help with long-distance running, soccer and powerlifting programs that begin soon. There will also be ice skating in the winter. A volunteer orientation is slated for Sept. 8, 7 p.m., at the Special Olympics office, 5730 Chambertin Drive, San Jose. For more information, call 267-2734.
