Annual coastal cleanup needs volunteers
The Santa Clara Valley Water District is encouraging volunteers to help clean a creek from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 15.
The 17th annual Coastal Cleanup Day, sponsored by the Creek Connections Action Group, is an opportunity for volunteers to remove trash and debris from various waterways throughout the county, including the Los Gatos Creek near Willow Glen, said water district spokesman Ed Morales. Last year, 1,045 volunteers helped remove more than 35,000 pounds of refuse.
Volunteers for the Los Gatos Creek site should meet at Blackford Elementary School, 1970 Willow St., and bring gloves, sturdy shoes and wear sunscreen. Refreshments and T-shirts will be provided, while they last. For more information, call 408.265.2607, ext. 2238 or visit www.cleanacreek.org.

Friends of WG Library need secretarial help
The Friends of the Willow Glen Library need a secretary for its board.
The group helps the branch library by holding book sales with proceeds benefiting special programs, audio books and videos and children's media and books, said branch librarian Maurice Stevenson. The group was also instrumental in renovating the library's patio and is contributing to modernizing its staff room and improving its front exterior, he said.
The group meets every other month, Stevenson said. The secretary takes minutes at the meetings and handles the group's correspondence. For more information, call Stevenson at 408.998.2053.

New Willow Glen Plaza complete for public
Upgrades and improvements at the old Willow Glen Shopping Center, now called the Willow Glen Plaza, are mostly complete, and the public is invited to attend a grand opening Sept. 15 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The shopping center, at the corner of Curtner Avenue and Almaden Road, has received a facelift and some new tenants over the past year, said center owner Joe Kovalik. He said all but some minor work is completed and a Quizno's sandwich shop, Starbuck's, Burger King, Grace's Beauty Salon and Unlimited Potential fitness studio have all moved in to join the Safeway, movie theater, restaurants and other retailers.
Kovalik said the center still has four vacancies, and he is working to find new tenants. One tenant, Hollywood Video, was unable to move in as planned last January because the company filed for bankruptcy, Kovalik said, so the building it would have occupied has been split to house two tenants.
The grand opening celebration will include a magician and other activities for children, a radio station and promotions and giveaways by nearly all the tenants, Kovalik said.

Longs beginning its construction soon
Construction of a new Longs Drugs at the corner of Lincoln and Brace avenues will begin this month, and the store should be open next May.
Longs had expected to begin construction last spring but was delayed, said Longs architect George Ramstad. He didn't specify the reason for the delay, attributing it to the "nature of the business."
Longs has selected a contractor for the project, he said, who will soon be sending a flyer with information about the construction and the project manager to neighbors within 500 feet of the site.
