    Rams win three in jamboree

30 teams in 22nd annual Willow Glen field hockey event

    By Dick Sparrer

Peggy Booth was kicking back a bit on Sunday morning. And for good reason--her Rams had just hosted the 22nd annual Willow Glen Field Hockey Jamboree and she was worn out.

That should come as no surprise, since Booth served as the director of the jamboree that featured 30 teams playing 75 games of field hockey over a two day span. And on top of that, she was coaching the Rams, who played five games in the jamboree.

So she was resting up a bit on Saturday, and so were her Rams after they had posted a 3-2 record in the event, winning all three games in shutouts and losing a pair of one-goal decisions.

"It was a good effort," said Booth of her Rams' showing in the jamboree. Willow Glen beat Gilroy 5-0, North Salinas 1-0 and Monta Vista 1-0 while losing 2-1 to St. Ignatius and 1-0 to Leigh.

Co-captains Julie Drake and Jenny Holt top a list of 11 seniors on this year's Willow Glen squad, and Booth felt that her seniors showed good leadership in the five games.

She was also pleased with the performance of sophomore goalkeeper Marina Mendez, who allowed just three goals in five games and recorded the three shutouts.

Booth got all of her Rams playing time in the jamboree.

"I really mix it up," she said. "I want all the kids to get playing experience. [The jamboree] is an opportunity for me to get a lot of kids in the game."

Mitty ended up first in the jamboree with St. Francis second, Cupertino third and Del Mar fourth.

Seniors seeing action for the Rams, along with Drake and Holt, were Wendy Crawford, Lindsey Herauf, Claire Hodgin, Ngoc Mai Nguyen, Stephanie Ogletree, Rishay Sobouti, Annie Stark, Stephanie Tait and Amy Burkhard.

The Rams will play their first regular season game this week when they host San Jose Academy at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, in a nonleague test.
