Hate-crimes hearings to be held in Santa Clara County

The California Attorney General's Commission on Civil Rights is sponsoring a hearing on hate crimes on Sept. 13, in the board of supervisors chamber at the county government center. Topics will include how to prevent hate crimes from developing and how to improve statewide reporting of hate crimes.

Public agencies are invited to attend from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.; the community is invited from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The hearing for the residents of Santa Clara County is one of many being held in communities throughout the state this summer.

The Santa Clara Network for a Hate-Free Community is hosting the hearing. Earlier this year it sponsored a day-long conference, addressing media stereotypes, hate groups, law enforcement, and a community action plan to thwart the development of hate-crime incidents in Santa Clara County.

The County Government Center is at 70 W. Hedding Street in San Jose. For more information, call Jim McEntee at 408.792.2301, or Susan Marsland at 408.792.2323.
