The 1930s were the golden age of this area
Thank you for the fascinating article by Chantal Lamers about sisters Kathy Stannard and Susan Thornberry. I shall certainly look forward to seeing the pictures of Old Willow Glen that they have. When I was a clerk in Frank Rao's Market at 1109 Lincoln Ave. in 1941 and 1942, one of my customers was a Mrs. Stannard, a lovely lady, indeed. There have been several fine histories written about Willow Glen, but alas, the 1930s, which I classify as the Golden Age of this area, seem all but forgotten. The late-comer Garden Theatre is often mentioned, but who can show me where the Willow Glen Theatre was located, or who can tell me who the family of four was who operated it, or, for that matter, who they bought it from? I have heard many versions of the original usage of the building now housing Willow Glen Wood-Fired Pizza, but none of them are correct. The building on the southeast corner of Willow and Settle, for a long time a barber shop and a cleaners, was originally what? A grocery store, Vanator's Market. I know because my grandfather owned it. The Victorian next door at 984 Willow St. was my home for many years. The market at the corner of Lincoln and Coe is traced back to Rosenberg's Market. Right? Wrong! It was at first Romano's Market. The building on the southeast corner of Willow and Curtis, housing a flower shop for many years, was originally a mom-and-pop-type grocery store, Truscott's Market. Those were the days, believe me.

Here's a vote for George W.
I am an active voter writing in support of George W. Bush's campaign for President of the United States. He is a man uniquely qualified to serve in the White House.
He has displayed insight and leadership in proposing reforms which will bring higher standards and accountability to our schools, keep the federal budget balanced, eliminate the marriage penalty on taxpayers, assisting every working family in America to acquire health insurance and preserve and protect Social Security for our current and future retirees.
I encourage other voters to support George W. Bush and to help him work to make our country truly prosperous. He is working to make certain the American dream touches every willing heart.
Please learn more about his vision for America at www.georgebush.com. Make sure you vote for George W. Bush for President on November 7.
