    Sunday school opens

    By Melissa Matchak

School's back in session at St. Francis Episcopal Church in Willow Glen--Sunday School, that is.

As of Sept. 10, children in pre-school through sixth grade can attend the Sunday School program at 9:45 a.m. every Sunday. New this year is the Children's Chapel program. According to Katherine Baginski Doar, director of religious education, the Children's Chapel will be held at the beginning of each Sunday School program, and will be a worship especially for children, including interactive story telling, songs appropriate for the age group, and a sermon-type discussion with the children. The children will then break up into the three classes, divided by grade. At least two teachers will always be in the pre-school/kindergarten and first through third grade classes, with at least one teacher in the fourth through sixth grade class. Baginski Doar said there are approximately 20 children in the Sunday School classes per week.

St. Francis Church originally started as a Sunday School program in a storefront on Minnesota Avenue in 1927, founded by a group of women who lived in the Willow Glen area. In 1948, the Sunday School became a parish, and Baginski Doar said many of the founding women are still involved with the church they helped start.

Regular services at St. Francis Church begin at 10 a.m. every Sunday. The youth group for seventh through 12th grade meets the first Sunday of the month after the service. For more information, call 408.269.3901.
