    Jags open with win

Richard Ugola and Ray Jones scored first-period touchdowns to start the San Jose City College football team on the road to a lopsided 31-14 victory over De Anza last Saturday night in the season opener for each squad.

Ugola took off on a 27-yard touchdown run early in the game, and Jones hauled in a 25-yard scoring toss from Nehemiah Andrade to give the Jaguars two TDs in the first.

James Lewis made it 21-0 for San Jose when he pulled in a 10-yard TD pass from Jed Wells in the second quarter.

De Anza scored before the half, but the Jaguars answered back quickly in the third quarter when Jeron Scott picked off a pass and raced 21 yards for a touchdown.

The Dons scored one more time in the fourth to cut the lead to 28-14, but Kamiel Brown booted a 32-yard field goal to wrap up the San Jose victory. Brown had kicked four extra points earlier in the game.

Local players on the San Jose squad this season include Jones, Scott and Jason McDowell of Gunderson; freshman defensive back Nich Holt, sophomore defensive back Shaun Thompson and freshman offensive lineman Paul Sanchez of Willow Glen; freshman starting center Jim Polmanteer, freshman offensive lineman Scott Matthews and freshman linebacker Jeremy Hoge of Leland; freshman fullback Ted Lopez and sophomore tight end Leo Lozano of Pioneer; and freshman running back Joseph Imperial of Lincoln.
