Mah tops list of senior returners for Rams

    By Dick Sparrer

It's a senior season for the girls tennis team at Willow Glen, and veteran coach Don DuShane is hoping that experience will make his Rams contenders in the race for the title in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League this fall.

They're certainly off to a good start.

Willow Glen opened the league campaign with back-to-back 6-1 wins over Andrew Hill and Pioneer.

The victory over the Mustangs was especially impressive, considering the fact that DuShane figures Pioneer to be one of three title contenders this season.

The coach rates Valley Christian as the division favorite, but picks Pioneer and his own Rams as the other top two teams.

The reason his Rams should be up there? Experience.

Six seniors dominate the Willow Glen lineup, led by No. 1 singles star Cheryl Mah, who returns for her third varsity season in the Rams' top spot.

Seniors Tram Nguyen and Neda Dowlatshahi are back together in the No. 1 doubles position for the Rams, playing there for the third straight year.

Mah cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles to start the Rams on the road to the 6-1 win over Hill last week.

    Cindy Ngo won 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, and Reyna Hernandez-Cervantes won a 7-5, 7-5 thriller at No. 4.

Nguyen and Dowlatshahi teamed for a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles. Bianca Gomez and Aubrey Schatz won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2, and Stephanie Mansfield and Chen Huynh went three sets to win 7-5, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3 at No. 3.

The Rams upped their season record to 6-0 and their league mark to 2-0 with the 6-1 win over Pioneer later in the week.

Kimmy Barnes, last year's division singles champion, defeated Mah 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1, but the Rams won the rest of the way through the ladder to pull out the team win.

    Ngo rolled 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, Hernandez-Cervantes won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 and Kelsey Giambruno won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4.

Nguyen and Dowlatshahi rolled 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, Gomez and Schatz won 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2, and Mansfield and Huynh won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3.
