Sunrisers install new club officers

The Sunrisers Kiwanis generally make a habit of meeting at the crack of dawn, but the Willow Glen club is opting to install its new officers at a Sept. 16 dinner at the White Dove Cafe.

Terri Walint Oropeza, an employee of Synopsys Inc. in Mountain View, is set to be installed as the Kiwanis' president. Newly retired Willow Glen Elementary School principal Gloria Burns will officially become the club's president-elect. Those attending the dinner will also give their approval to vice president Harold Bounds, treasurer Micki Muir and secretary Jeanne Meeks.

New members of the Kiwanis' board of directors are Caren Bounds, Jerry Chapman, Dot Cohen, Eleanor Lane and Chuck May. The club's immediate past president is Jim Crownover.

This year the Willow Glen Sunrisers have continued to work with the Broadway High School Key Club to maintain the empty lot at Fisk and Coe avenues, also known as Fisk Park.

Ethics board seeks two new members

The San Jose City Council is accepting applications for two seats on the city's Campaign Finance Review and Ethics Board. The deadline to apply is Oct. 2.

Duties of the ethics board include reviewing and investigating allegations of ethics-code violations and making recommendations to the council with regard to campaign and ethics regulations and policies.

Applicants must be registered to vote in the city of San Jose and should have demonstrated familiarity and experience with campaign laws. They should not be employed by the city nor have any direct or substantial financial interest in any business, work or official action taken by the city.

While serving on the board, no member can hold any other public office or publicly endorse any candidate for city office. Also, no member can have run for public office for a period of two years prior to their tenure on the ethics board.

The two seats available are for an unexpired term and a four-year term, both ending March 1, 2000. Board members are appointed by no less then two-thirds vote of the council.

AARP speaker to discuss pending health-care crisis

The coming crisis in health care for seniors will be discussed at a meeting of the Willow Glen Chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 28, at the Willow Glen Senior Center, 2175 Lincoln Ave. The public is invited to attend, and there is no admission charge.

The speaker will be Berkeley Driessel, chairman of the Community Care Committee of the county Senior Care Commission. Driessel will talk about the problem facing seniors as the federal government pushes for more managed care, while at the same time certain HMOs are abandoning Medicare patients.

Open Space District seeks volunteers

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District is seeking weekday volunteers to become field trip leaders in their environmental education program, Spaces and Species: Exploring Natural Communities.

Outdoor-education leaders spend the day hiking, interpreting nature and leading educational games and activities with small groups of fourth- to sixth-graders.

Those interested in becoming outdoor-education leader volunteers need to attend an informational meeting on Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. at the district's office in Los Altos. Training will be held on Tuesdays during the fall. For more information, call Carleen Bruins at 650/691-1200.

Exchange students need host families

The American Intercultural Student Exchange is seeking host families for foreign exchange high school students during the 1998-99 school year.

Exchange students stay with host families during the school year and attend local high schools during their 10-month stay.

Noted educator to speak to WVRWF

The West Valley Republican Women, Federated will host a "Coffee with Gloria Hom" at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 16, at the Saratoga Country Club, located at 21900 Prospect Road. Hom is scheduled to review November ballot propositions.

Hom is the chairwoman of the Economics Department at Mission College and the division chairwoman for the social sciences division. Also a trustee emeritus of the California State University system, Hom received appointments to federal advisory committees from both President Reagan and President Bush. Hom is the immediate past chairwoman of the Santa Clara County Republican Central Committee.
