The Willow Glen ResidentYoung Rams, Mustangs winThe Willow Glen and Pioneer frosh-soph football teams both opened the 1998 season in impressive fashion. The Rams opened the year by blanking Lincoln 14-0 in an game at PAL Stadium. Nick Rohwer ran for one touchdown and Al Rideau pulled in a touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Bobby Hobbs to lead the Rams to the victory. Sophomore Steve Klein was in on nine tackles to lead the defense for the Rams. It was an impressive win for the Rams, who were division champions last fall. Pioneer, meanwhile, started the season with an impressive 19-0 win over Gunderson. Dan Borges blocked a punt that Keith Bernstein recovered at the Gunderson 34. On the next play, Pioneer's first play from scrimmage this season, Jacob French broke loose on a 34-yard touchdown run. Donald Bresee upped the lead to 12-0 when he picked off a Gunderson pass and raced 26 yards to a touchdown. Pioneer closed out the scoring in the third period when Dan Scheffer ran one in from four yards out.
