Man tries to assault local elementary school student
Police say incident is unrelated to earlier assault last April
By Kate Carter
San Jose Police are looking for a man suspected of trying to assault a 9-year-old girl Sept. 6 while she waited to be picked up from Washington Elementary School.
The girl, a fourth-grader who attended the school, located outside Willow Glen at 100 Oak St., was standing outside the school waiting for her brother at about 3 p.m. when a man approached her and asked where the bathrooms were, San Jose Police detective Ron Starkey said. She took him to the bathrooms on the campus, where he held a knife to her throat, forced her into a bathroom stall and tried to assault her, Starkey said.
Several children entered the bathroom soon after, and the suspect fled before he could assault the girl, Starkey said. He said the suspect had been noticed in the area of the school and the nearby San Jose Public Library Biblioteca Latinoamerica before the attempted assault and was seen by an adult at the school.

Police describe the suspect as a white male in his early 40s. He is about 5 feet, 6 inches tall with a medium build and has gray or blonde hair that is very short and balding. He was wearing blue jeans and a green, blue and white striped short-sleeve shirt. He was unshaven and has a nervous habit of licking his lips or moving his tongue, which police do not believe is lewd in nature.
Starkey said police do not believe the incident is related to the sexual assault of a 7-year-old girl last April, who was approached and attacked by a man as she walked to school at Gardner Academy in Willow Glen. The spring incident took place several blocks from Washington Elementary, and police are still searching for that suspect.
To provide information on the case, call Starkey at 408.277.4102. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 408.947.7867.
