Killeen's goal helps Fusion clinch title

A 35-yard shot by Megan Killeen found the back of the net to break a scoreless tie and lead the Fusion soccer team to the team title in the 18th annual San Diego Fire Labor Day Classic in La Jolla.

Fusion, a girls under-14 class 1 (select) team from the De Anza Soccer League, won five straight games to win the title in the tourney that's one of the largest in the state.

Fusion opened the tournament with three straight wins, beating Mission Viejo 2-0, a team from Arizona 4-0 and the Del Mar Sharks 1-0.

The three wins pushed the locals into the semifinals, and Fusion fought the Serreno Golden Eagles from Southern California to a scoreless tie through regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods. The game was decided on a penalty kick, and Fusion came out on top 3-2 to advance to the finals.

Fusion met the Sharks in a rematch in the title game, and the clubs were again locked in a scoreless tie before Killeen's goal lifted the locals to the 1-0 victory, their second 1-0 win over Del Mar.

Fusion outscored its foes 8-0 in the five games of the tournament with goalkeeper Nicole Golobic blanking the opposition.

Joining Killeen and Golobic on the championship squad were Catherine Kelly, Sarah Nakamoto, Jamie Wider, Brittany Vellios, Claire Gill, Kelly Maxwell, Nora Soza, Caroline Smith, Kathryn Wagner, Robin Chang, Katie Anderson, Carrie Macintosh, Lizzy Innes and Erin Maulhardt.

Players on the squad reside in Palo Alto, Saratoga, Los Gatos, Santa Clara, Campbell and Willow Glen.
