    New sanctuary organ

National concert artist Christian Elliott will present the inaugural concert on the new Allen Renaissance 370 digital sanctuary organ at 3 p.m. on Sept. 24, at the Willow Glen United Methodist Church. Elliott was recently the senior organist and Associate Minister of Worship at Menlo Park Presbyterian Church. He has also performed at the Crystal Cathedral, the Hollywood Bowl and before the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This presentation is open to the public at no charge. For more information, call Robert Birnstihl, organist and Associate Director of Music Ministries, at 408.363.8897.

    One open seat on commission

Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian is inviting interested citizens to apply for an open seat on the county planning commission. Simitian will select and nominate an applicant to the county board of supervisors.

The commission influences county land use policy and works to solve regional and neighborhood development problems. The commission advises the supervisors on ordinance amendments dealing with land development and subdivision matters, including zoning changes. The commission has the power to grant or deny use permits and administers the county's planning laws for land use and development in unincorporated areas.

The position requires attendance at the commission's monthly meetings, residency in the county and an interest in land use and development.

Interested citizens should contact Simitian's office at 408.299.3540. The deadline for applying is Oct. 1.

    The 'Ark' opens

After celebrating its 125th anniversary a few years ago, Willow Glen United Methodist Church celebrated the completion of "The Ark," the new education building, on Sept. 17. Since the church building was constructed on the corner of Newport and Minnesota streets in the early 1940s, Sunday School classes have been held in the basement rooms.

"The Ark" is a large addition to the Willow Glen Preschool, and now, with the increased space, an after-school, extended-care program is being offered. For more information about the preschool or extended care programs, call the church office at 408.294.9796.
