Macchi leads Rams to second victory

A pair of one-goal decisions proved crucial for the Willow Glen girls water polo team when the Rams competed in their own Willow Glen Scramble tournament last weekend.

The first of the two was a one-goal victory that helped the Rams get into the Scramble championship game, but the second was a heartbreaking one-goal defeat in overtime that cost the Rams the crown.

Willow Glen edged Menlo-Atherton 6-5 and whipped Carmel 11-2 to advance to the championship round of the tourney against Leland. But the Chargers scored a single goal in overtime to pull out a thrilling 7-6 win over the Rams in the finals.

The Rams and Chargers were locked in a 2-2 tie after a period before Willow Glen scored twice in the second quarter to lead 4-2 at the half.

But Leland outscored WG 3-1 in the third to tie the game 5-5, then the teams matched goals in the fourth to finish regulation locked in a 6-6 tie.

Leland scored in overtime to break the tie and win the championship.

Catherine Whitman, who scored two goals in the title game for the Chargers, was named the tournament's most valuable player. Lily Majlessi, who scored three goals in the finals, and Monica Machado, who scored once, were other Leland players named to the all-tourney list.

Willow Glen's Courtney Livak and Whitney Gregg, Live Oak's Erin Costello and Menlo-Atherton's Kelly Simonson rounded out the all-tournament team.

Livak scored three goals, and Gregg, Kristin Livak and Tracy Harding added one each for the Rams in the title game against the Chargers.

    K. Livak and Alicia Barreto drilled two goals each, and C. Livak and Gregg hit a goal apiece in the tight 6-5 win over Menlo-Atherton to open the tournament.

The Rams pounded Carmel 11-2 in their only other game of the tourney. K. Livak led the scoring effort with four goals, and Gregg and Harding had two goals each. C. Livak, Kara Buchanan and Jamie Watts also scored goals in the Willow Glen win.

Live Oak finished third in the tourney, beating Pioneer 13-2 and Menlo-Atherton 6-4, but losing to Leland 4-3. Menlo-Atherton was fourth, beating Carmel 10-5.

Pioneer lost 9-3 to Leland, but battled back to beat Carmel 5-4 to finish fifth overall.

    Rams win again

For the second week in a row, the Willow Glen football team pulled out a tight win by a touchdown or less, beating Silver Creek 20-19.

Senior quarterback David Macchi had another big day for the Rams, completing 15 of 31 passes for 165 yards and a couple of touchdowns.

The Rams had to fight back from a 19-0 deficit in this one. Silver Creek scored two first-period touchdowns and one more in the second to take the early lead.

But Macchi, a cool customer in his third year as the Willow Glen varsity starter, tossed a 14-yard TD pass to Shane Lamar, then hit Leon Thomas for a 2-point conversion to make it 19-8 at the half.

Thomas, who just missed the century mark with 18 carries for 96 yards, ran 19 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter, then Macchi found Will Rideau for 32 yards and the game's final touchdown.

The clubs battled through a scoreless fourth quarter, though the Raiders threatened late in the game. But the Rams were able to hold on for the win.

A week earlier Willow Glen had claimed a hard-earned 21-13 win over Lincoln.

The Rams will challenge powerful Oak Grove this week, taking on the Eagles on Sept. 24, 7:30 p.m., at PAL Stadium.

    Panthers take title

The Presentation girls volleyball team whipped Menlo School in two straight games to claim the championship in the 16-team Northwest Volleyball Magazine Invitational in Walla Walla, Wash.

Jennifer Joines, who had 22 kills in the 15-4, 15-13 championship win over Menlo, was named the most valuable player of the tournament. She was joined on the all-tourney list by teammates Lynzy Caton and Paige Desmet.

Joines, who is headed to UOP on a volleyball scholarship next year, finished the tournament with 41 kills and 28 digs.

The Panthers had won the title in the Milpitas Spikefest a week earlier.

The Willow Glen girls volleyball team improved to 5-2 in 1999 with a 15-13, 15-6, 15-10 win over San Jose Academy last week.

The Rams are led by seven seniors on their 11-player roster this fall, including Katrina Battaglia, Megan Braga, Lucia Catania, Angela Garrotto, Kristen Handa, Nicole Nakamoto and Jennifer Silva.

    Big hockey win

The Willow Glen girls field hockey team was able to stick it to St. Francis 2-1 in a non-league game last week.

Goals by Ali Lake and Stacey Santomauro, both off assists from Kellie Arnone, sparked the Rams to the victory.

Willow Glen, now 2-0-1 for the year, had opened the year by fighting Leland to a scoreless tie, then crushed Santa Catalina 6-0.

Colleen Wozny belted in two goals and added an assist, and Arnone had two goals to lead the Rams to the easy win. Santomauro had a goal and an assist, Samantha Bruni scored a goal, Monica Butler had two assists, and Lara Covey and Courtney Miller each had assists in the win.

The Rams will host Gilroy in a 3 p.m. game on Sept. 22.
