Police arrest man for shooting couch

A 24-year-old man who lives on the outskirts of Willow Glen was arrested for firing gunshots into his couch, said San Jose Police Department spokesman John Carrillo.

On Sept. 14, just before 5 p.m., police were alerted by an anonymous female caller that shots had been fired in a Rinconada Drive apartment complex. When police arrived, building tenants pointed out Luis Fernando Martinez's apartment.

Inside the apartment, police discovered a .45-caliber handgun and a couch blasted by three gunshots. Martinez admitted he had fired off the gun all three times, Carrillo said.

"Apparently they were celebrating Independence Day," Carrillo said. "Martinez admitted to drinking beer and foolishly firing three rounds into the couch."

Martinez was taken to the police station, fingerprinted, photographed, cited and released. The citation was for discharging a firearm within city limits, Carrillo said. The gun was confiscated and booked into evidence.

Farmers market draws to a close

After four months of fruits, vegetables and homegrown goodies, the Willow Glen Farmers Market is coming to a close. On Sept. 27, farmers will pack up for the winter.

Until the market closes, farmers will be handing out free fruit and vegetable baskets to winners of a drawing.

"It's the farmers' way of saying thank you to their customers," market organizer Melanie Defé said.

Also on the last day of the market, a speaker will tell shoppers how to do home composting and lighten the load on county landfills. Defé says this event is a great way to top off a very successful season.

This year some 20 farmers turned out each week. Defe is hoping more farmers will participate next year.

Next year the Farmers Market will kick off sometime in early May with a pancake breakfast in honor of Willow Glen Elementary School's 100th anniversary.

"Our rodeo theme combines the proud history and traditions of the old West while our Western Fair brings you the fun and games of yesteryear," said Linda Floyd, co-chair of the ball and a Willow Glen resident.

About 1,250 guests are expected to participate. Reservations ($150 per person) are required; call 879-1032, extension 133.
