    Rams lose another

The Willow Glen football team slipped to 0-3 in the young season with a tough 21-20 loss to Silver Creek last Friday afternoon.

The Rams battled from behind with a touchdown late in the game to cut the Silver Creek lead to a point in the final minute of play. But an attempted pass for a game-winning two-point conversion fell incomplete, and the Rams ended up losing by the one point.

The Raiders had scored first in the game, but Willow Glen made it close when junior quarterback Justin Johnson hit Steve Lopez with a 6-yard touchdown pass in the first period to cut the lead to 7-6.

That's how it remained until the final quarter when the clubs traded touchdowns.

Silver Creek scored to go up 14-6, then Johnson found Mark Sarinana with a 62-yard touchdown pass. Johnson tossed to David Estrada for the two-point conversion, and the game was tied 14-14.

The Raiders scored again, but once more Willow Glen answered back. Robert Campos blasted over from the one in the final minutes of play to cut the lead to 21-20. But the Rams missed on the 2-point try.

Willow Glen will go after its first win of the year when the Rams host James Lick on Sept. 28, 3:30 p.m. The game marks the league opener for each club in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

    West Valley wins

Sophomore quarterback David Macchi (Willow Glen) threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more to lead the West Valley Community College football team to a rousing 63-28 win over Diablo Valley College in Coast Conference play last Friday afternoon in Saratoga.

Macchi tossed a couple of TD passes to Brian Davis (Pioneer) for 14 and 13 yards, and he hit Kevin Gray (Pioneer) with a 48-yard scoring toss. Macchi also ran 26 yards for a West Valley touchdown in the second quarter and snuck over from the one for a TD in the final period.

Heath Ferreira (Valley Christian) had a pair of short touchdown runs in the win.

The win was the first of the year for the Vikings. They will take their 1-2 season record up against the College of the Sequoias on Sept. 28 in a 3 p.m. game at the West Valley campus in Saratoga.

In other recent action, San Jose City College rolled to a 43-14 win over the College of Marin.

Reymon Murphy scored three touchdowns on runs of 23, 46 and 14 yards to lead the Jaguars to the victory.

    Agoos Bobblehead

The first 10,000 fans to arrive at Spartan Stadium for the playoff soccer game between the San Jose Earthquakes and the Columbus Crew will receive a free Jeff Agoos Bobblehead Doll. The game begins at 7 p.m. on Sept. 26.
