Cobras hit the road, win title
Youth baseball team takes title in the state championship
By Dick Sparrer
Most youth teams stick pretty close to home to play their baseball. But not the San Jose Cobras. They chose to take their show on the road.
The Cobras, a 10-year-old traveling team from San Jose, headed to Vacaville over Labor Day weekend to play in the USSSA Northern California state championship tournament. And they won the title.
The Cobras edged J.P. Electric 4-1 in the championship game to clinch the crown. Chris Foley tossed four innings of two-hit baseball to get the win, and Tyler Derby flipped the final two frames to claim the save.
Derby, Kyle Burchfiel and Travis Hatfield each ripped run-scoring doubles to help the Cobras to the 4-1 victory.
It was the sixth tournament appearance for the Cobras in 1999. The local club finished the season with two tournament championships and four second-place finishes.
