River Park teaching composting class
The Guadalupe River Park and Gardens is encouraging people to get ready for the spring planting season by preparing compost now.
The park, in conjunction with the Santa Clara County Home Composting Education Program, is holding "An Evening of Compost" workshop Oct. 17 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Guadalupe Garden Center, 715 Spring St. The workshop will be led by Master Composter Phil Cornish who will teach the many aspects of composting, from what to compost, to how to make it and how to use it.

Booksin preparing for walk-a-thon Oct. 13
Booksin Elementary School is holding its biggest annual fundraiser Oct. 13, with its students lining up to circle the school playground at 9 a.m.
The more miles they walk, the more money they raise to help fund the school's music program, computer lab, new picnic tables and playground equipment. The event will also include a silent auction, with proceeds going to the school.
Event spokeswoman Melinda Gedryn said last year's students averaged 12 miles each and totaled 7,752. This year, they hope to outdo themselves and beat last year's total earnings of $106,000.

Institute offering teacher workshop
Middle and high school teachers in Santa Clara County are invited to attend a two-day workshop about reducing pollution in homes and schools.
The Aquatic Outreach Institute is holding "Watching our Watersheds" from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Coyote Hellyer County Park on Oct. 20 and Hacienda Elementary School on Oct. 27. Participants will receive information about how to lead environmental activities and develop projects to reduce the use of pesticides, herbicides and household products. Teachers can receive academic credit for the workshop, and those who conduct a classroom action project can receive a $150 stipend.
The workshop is sponsored by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation and the Santa Clara Valley Urban Runoff Pollution Prevention Program. It costs $25, and registration is required. For more information, call 510.231.5783.
Library holding book sales this month
Bookworms of all kinds can get good deals at the Friends of the San Jose Public Library's used book sale at the Dr. King Main Library, 180 W. San Carlos St., this month.
The library system is offloading books it is taking out of circulation and book donations it cannot use. Members of the Friends of the Library and school teachers are invited to a preview sale Oct. 24 from 5 to 8 p.m. For a nom- inal fee, new members can sign up at the door.
The general public is welcome Oct. 25-27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and nonprofit organizations with ident- ifying letterhead can pick up the leftover books for free on Oct. 29 from 9 a.m. to noon.
Hundreds of books in all genres are available, library spokeswoman Lorraine Oback said, and a paper grocery-bag-full can be purchased for $5.
"It's a good opportunity to pick up bestsellers," she said.

Tour local solar homes Oct. 13
The Northern California Solar Energy Association is sponsoring a fair of energy-efficient products and vendors and a tour of area solar homes on Oct. 13.
The fair is at Starbird Park in West San Jose, 1050 Boynton Ave., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Individuals can sign up there to participate in the tour for $15 per carload, association treasurer Andy Black said. The tour will stop at three to five homes in San Jose, Santa Clara and Sunnyvale that feature solar energy devices and other energy making and saving technologies, he said.

WG and Lincoln High holding 50th reunion
Willow Glen High School and Abraham Lincoln High School classes of 1951 are celebrating their 50th high school reunions together at 6 p.m. on Oct. 26 at the Hyatt St. Claire Hotel, 302 S. Market St.
The reunion committee has also arranged special tours of Willow Glen High School on Oct. 26 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Abraham Lincoln High School from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., to show classmates how things look today.

Locals collect tons of trash from creeks
More than 1,000 volunteers pulled 3,330 pounds of trash and 1,995 pounds of recyclable material from West Valley waterways Sept. 19 as part of Coastal Cleanup Day.
Cleanups were held at 20 different sites in Santa Clara County. Seventy-eight volunteers who cleaned up Los Gatos Creek from Camden Avenue to Lark Avenue collected about 400 pounds of garbage and 175 pounds of recyclable material.
