End of Life/Glossary
Terminal illness--an incurable and irreversible condition that, without intervention, will produce death within a short time.
Terminal sedation--the continuous administration of medication that brings relief from pain and unconsciousness by sedation and includes withholding of fluids and nutrition.
Artificial nutrition/hydration--feeding from a tube inserted into the nose and throat or stomach.
Cardiac arrest--the cessation of heartbeats.
CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation)--restoration of heartbeat through drugs, electric shock or chest compression.
DNR--do not resuscitate.
Ventilator--a breathing machine that moves air into the lungs if the patient can not breathe independently.
Persistent Vegetative State--a form of permanent unconsciousness.
ICU--intensive care unit especially equipped to help patients whose condition requires constant monitoring.
Palliative Care--a comprehensive approach used by hospice to treat serious illness by focusing on controlling pain and relieving suffering by caring for the physical, psychological, and spiritual needs of the patient and family.
