Speak Out
Kitty cats, at least, kindly cover up
I just had to send in a comment regarding Jennifer Fernandes' letter about cats pooping in her yard ("Speak Out," Sept. 22).
She asks people to properly restrain their cats to their own yards or to "properly train them." Ha! That's funny! I assume that she wasn't trying to be humorous, though. I think she was actually serious!
First off, dear Jennifer, I suggest you cover your child's sandbox like the rest of the sane world does! I bought one with a cute matching cover for my son.
I would much rather have a cat poop in my yard (and believe me, there is no way to keep a cat in one yard--please! That's a joke) than a dog. At least a cat kindly covers up what it's done rather than leaving a steaming pile there to attract flies!

Where did 'ridiculous names' come from?
Hooray for Leota Kuzma ("Take a vote on what to call Willow Glen," Sept. 22) and Robert Smith (" 'The Glen' nickname destroys WG's history," Aug. 11). I wrote to Cookie Curci-Wright many months ago about her column and mentioned this very fact. I read the paper mostly because of her column. I remember her father and the Pronto Pup very well.
Where did these ridiculous names like "The Avenue," "The Glen" and "Glenites" come from? I have lived in Willow Glen, near Lincoln Avenue, for over 50 years and will never be a "Glenite."

Founders Day had something for all
I feel compelled to react to Sue Evans' Speak Out in the Sept. 29 edition of the Resident ("Save the rides for school fundraisers, not Founders Day").
Founders Day 1999 was enjoyable in my family's eyes because it offered something for everyone in the family. The parade, the arts-and-crafts booths, the musical groups, more than enough food booths and, of course, for my 3-year-old, the rides.
Willow Glen is fast becoming a community of younger families nicely blending in with the older folks who have been here for years. The whole premise of Founders Day is to bring people of all ages together to celebrate the founding of our community known as Willow Glen. Willow Glen is very unique and it is events such as Founders Day that give the entire community a chance to come together.
I'm sorry if Sue and her entourage had to endure fumes and noise; they could have avoided this by coming in on a side street or the other end of Lincoln Avenue. As for taking my 3-year-old to Great America and spending at least $60 for both of us to get in, I would have rather spent (and did) this money for the rides, the food and other things at this event right here in my own community.
Kudos to those reponsible for putting on this event and who made this Founders Day an enjoyable experience for everyone in this guy's family. For the future: keep the parade, the music, the food, the arts-and-crafts booths and consider bringing back the rides and the Peruvian musical group in future years. Continue to make this event appealing to everyone who lives in the community; Lincoln Avenue is certainly long enough to accommodate all of the above and by doing so you will keep the Willow Glen Founders Day a unique experience and not just another art and wine festival that appeals only to select groups.

Memo for 2000: more crafts, fewer dogs
I'm surely in agreement with Sue Evans--let's not make a carnival out of Founders Day. Next year we should have larger "No Dogs" signs, as there are still people with dogs and leashes we have to dodge.
We also need more crafters. I understand that some of the sellers at Tapestry in Talent from San Jose the week before were going to be at Founders Day here in Willow Glen.

Expectations were deflated by event
As Founders Day Sunday wound down, the kiddie rides at Willow wound around and down, the air hanging for the most part empty of laughter. The rides closed the day along with the blaring horrid sound system.
I could not listen any more.
Pulling into my office lot the next day, I noticed colored balloons hanging in the trees across the street, tossing slightly in the breeze, deflated. I know the feeling.
So much for Founders Day 1999. Should there be one next year, let's look at 1995. That was a fine weekend.

What's wrong with name 'Willow Glen'?
Just finished reading my Willow Glen Resident (Sept. 22), and I am responding to Leota Kuzma's letter regarding taking a poll on what to call Willow Glen. I agree with Kuzma and [Robert] Smith.
So, whose idea was it to change the name? What's wrong with the name Willow Glen?
Sounds like someone has way too much spare time on their hands.

'Glenites' should go out with bathwater
I am in 100 percent agreement with Leota Kuzma. In addition to "The Glen" get rid of "Glenites"!

Willow Glen name deserves more respect
It's WILLOW GLEN; it is Lincoln Avenue! Do we call San Francisco "Frisco"?
We have just as much pride as the City by the Bay, so get with it and address our lovely village properly.
