Rams lose league opener

Willow Glen girls nail tennis, field hockey wins

    By Dick Sparrer

The Willow Glen girls tennis team started the second half of the league season the same way it started the first... with a win.

The Rams improved to 8-0 in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League with a 6-1 win over Andrew Hill last week, just a few days after beating Leigh 5-2 in the final match of the first half.

Willow Glen, now 12-0 for the year, opened play last week by winning five of seven matches against the Longhorns.

Senior Cheryl Mah rolled to a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles to start the Rams on the road to the victory.

Sophomore Kelsey Giambruno came through a tough 7-6 (7-1), 6-0 win at No. 3 to give the Rams a 2-2 split in singles play against the Longhorns, but Willow Glen came back to sweep the three doubles matches to clinch the team win.

Neda Dowlatshahi and Tram Nguyen joined forces for a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Aubrey Schatz and Bianca Gomez won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 and Stephanie Mansfield and Ana Ruiz won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3.

The Rams came back with an even easier 6-1 win over Hill two days later.

    Mah won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, Cindy Ngo won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2, Giambruno won 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 3 and Ruiz won 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 at No. 4.

Nguyen and Dowlatshahi posted a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles and Mansfield teamed with Chen Huyhn for a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3.

The Rams hope to continue their winning ways this week when they battle Pioneer, Oak Grove and Independence in three league matches. Willow Glen hosts Oak Grove on Oct. 6, 3:15 p.m.

    Rams win a pair

Stacey Santomauro and Kellie Arnone knocked in three goals apiece against Leigh to lead the Willow Glen girls field hockey team to a pair of wins last week.

The Rams crushed Gilroy 8-0 to open the week, then came back to whip Leigh 7-1. Willow Glen battled Lynbrook to a scoreless tie in the opening round of the Mt. Hamilton Division later in the week.

The Rams, 4-0-2 for the year, blasted Gilroy. Santomauro scored two goals off assists from Arnone and Ali Lake. Arnone scored off an assist from Jenny Holt. Lake scored two, both off assists from Colleen Wozny, Wozny scored off an assist from Lake, and Holt scored twice, both of her goals coming off assists from Arnone.

The Rams will host Los Gatos on Oct. 5 and Mitty on Oct. 7 in a pair of 3 p.m. starts.
