Booth, Rams off to hot start in field hockey

By Dick Sparrer

Erin Booth is a senior who knows her way to the goal.

But, then, so do senior Kristen Rovai and junior Kellie Arnone.

So what's that mean to the girls field-hockey team at Willow Glen? Well, a pretty hot start to the 1998 season for one thing!

The Rams have five wins and a tie in seven matches to open the '98 campaign. And they're off to a 3-0 start in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

Booth and Arnone knocked in two goals apiece, and Rovai added four assists to lead the Rams to a lopsided 6-0 win over Cupertino last week. Lara Covey and Tara Kroll also scored goals in the win.

Earlier in the week, Booth pounded home three goals, and Kroll and Stacey Santomauro added goals for Willow Glen in a lopsided 5-0 win over San Jose.

The Rams led just 1-0 at the half but poured in four second-half goals to run away from the Bulldogs.

Junior goalkeeper Shannon Donovan had a perfect week for the Rams with a pair of shutouts. But, then, the Rams are getting used to that. They've shut out their last four opponents.

Willow Glen opened the year with a 5-2 win over Mitty. Booth scored three goals to lead the Rams to the win. Santomauro and Lindsey Rovai also scored in the game.

Arnone scored Willow Glen's lone goal in a 1-1 tie with Lynbrook, Booth scored the Rams' only goal in a 5-1 loss to Los Gatos and Arnone's goal gave WG a 1-0 win over Prospect in three nonleague tests.

Willow Glen opened league play with a 4-0 win over Los Altos. Booth and Arnone buried two goals apiece for the winners.

Booth is the Willow Glen scoring leader with 11 goals through the first seven matches of the year. Arnone has supported with six goals.

The Rams will try to maintain their winning ways this week. They hosted Monta Vista on Oct. 6 and will visit Homestead on Oct. 8 in a 3 p.m. match.
