North Willow Glen re-elects most of association board

Some residents volunteered to fill other positions

    By Moryt Milo

Members of the North Willow Glen Neighborhood Association re-elected most of their board members at the association's first general election Sept. 25.

Those appointed to their first full term included President Alison England, Vice President Dan Erceg, Secretary/Treasurer Harvey Darnell, City Liaison Tom Smith and Community Liaison Dana Rysavy. Members also elected two members-at-large, Debbie Palmer and Carol Stanford, who will be available to support the association as needed.

Several neighbors voiced their disappointment at the small turnout, with 20 people in attendance. England said members went door to door leaving fliers throughout the community, which notified residents of upcoming elections. She said recent national events might have prevented people from coming.

Although the association was first created in February 2001, neighbors agreed to accept interim positions for six months until general elections were held. On Sept. 25, members were voted in for one-year terms.

Many of the neighbors present were excited about formalizing the association.

"I didn't think I'd live to see the day when people would be this interested in upgrading our neighborhood,"Erceg said.

As the nominating began, the association was concerned about filling all the positions, but neighbors stepped up and volunteered. "We want people to be involved to the degree they are comfortable," England said. "We don't want people to feel the job is too big. We are really sensitive to that."

The association also created several new positions to better serve their neighborhood, which included street captains (the eyes and ears on each block), homeowner improvement programs advocate, and a traffic calming wizard.

The association will meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month at the San Jose Word of Faith Church, located on the northwest corner of Fuller and Delmas avenues.
