Young Entrepreneurs
By Melissa Matchak
Entrepreneurs are generally known in the Bay Area for starting Internet or high-tech companies. However, Cara Schroeder, 8, and Ashley Tovar, 10, are known in one Willow Glen neighborhood for their help in doing yardwork, in an effort to raise money to build a playhouse. These young businesswomen created an ad and, starting in June after school ended for the summer, began doing gardening and other tasks for a fee.
Willow Glen resident Billie Ericson said the girls come to her home every Tuesday and help her by sweeping the yard and also by doing mailings.
"They've done mailings for me, sorting and labeling, which I pay them more for because it helps me with my business," Ericson said. Ericson said the girls have about four or five "clients," families in the neighborhood that they help out. She said many of them have created tasks for the girls to do.
"I'm the last person to rain on entrepreneurship," Ericson said. "They're absolutely priceless."
