The Willow Glen ResidentAround The GlenWillow Glen students merit semifinalist standing in national scholarship contest Willow Glen resident Patrick Cahalan was among 27 seniors from Bellarmine College Preparatory and 15,000 high school students from throughout the country to be named a semifinalist in the 44th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Bellarmine senior Chris Bayne was designated as an outstanding African American semifinalist in the 1999 National Achievement Scholarship competition. Four Presentation High School seniors were also named National Merit semifinalists: Christina Brown, Anne Erickson, Teresa Ponikvar and Shirley Wang. The nonprofit National Merit Scholarship Corporation awards scholarships annually to high school seniors with outstanding academic records. This year's semifinalists were the high scorers in their state on the Preliminary SATs; they must fill certain requirements by spring to advance to finalist standing. --Sharon Parks Seats are open on two commissions The San Jose City Council will be accepting applications for appointments to the City Council Salary Setting Commission and the Civil Service Commission until Oct. 28. The salary commission recommends to the council the monthly salary levels for councilmembers , including the mayor. The Civil Service Commission makes recommendations to the City Council and city manager and conducts investigations concerning the administration of classified personnel. There are currently two vacancies on the salary commission for terms beginning Jan. 1, 1999, and expiring Dec. 31, 2002. Those appointed must carry out their full terms of office. There is one position available on the Civil Service Commission for an unexpired term ending Dec. 1, 1999. All applicants for both positions must be residents and registered voters in the city of San Jose. Applications can be obtained at the city clerk's office in room 116 of City Hall. For more information, call 277-4429 or 277-4424. --Sharon Parks O'Connor hosts senior health and safety fair A free community health and safety fair to inform seniors about topics of particular interest will be held on Oct. 17 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at O'Connor Hospital's medical office building at 2101 Forest Ave. in San Jose. Free flu shots will be offered to the first 400 seniors. Other services available at the fair include cholesterol screenings; vision, eyeglasses, blood pressure checks; and glucose testing. Entertainment and refreshments will also be offered. For further information, call 947-2563. --Sharon Parks David Shannon says 'yes' to book-signing at Hicklebee's David Shannon, author of the award-winning children's book NO, DAVID!, will be at Hicklebee's Children's Books, 1378 Lincoln Ave., for a book-signing on Oct. 16 from 3 to 5 p.m. NO, DAVID! is actually a reworking of a book Shannon wrote when he was 5 years old: On every page were the words, "No, David!" and a picture of him doing something he wasn't supposed to do.
