Rams drive home with two hockey titles

By Dick Sparrer

It's a long drive from Willow Glen to Davis, but the field hockey team from Willow Glen didn't mind making the four-hour round trip.

The Rams headed east to play in the annual Davis Tournament on Oct. 3, and it proved to be a rather productive weekend for both the varsity and junior varsity teams.

Peggy Booth's squads both won team championships at the tournament, and the Rams were well-represented on the all-tournament team.

"It was an outstanding tournament for both the varsity and JV teams," Booth said.

Senior Nicki Garcia was named to the all-tourney list and picked the best defensive player of the tournament after leading the Rams to the varsity title.

Senior Erin Booth was picked to the all-tournament squad for the second straight year, and junior Kellie Arnone won all-tournament honorable mention.

Sophomore goalkeeper Lisa Hunter was selected as the best defensive player of the tournament in the junior varsity division.

The Rams returned home after their tournament success to get back to action in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League and got right back to their winning ways.

Willow Glen knocked off a tough Monta Vista squad 2-1 thanks to a goal and an assist from Booth and a goal by senior Kristen Rovai.

"Our team continues to get better every game," added the WG coach. "And our defense [led by Garcia] is playing great!"

The Rams played well again on Thursday but could manage just a tie in a league game against Homestead. Rovai scored off an Arnone assist to give Willow Glen a 1-0 halftime lead, but the Mustangs scored in the second half to tie it.

The win and the tie left the Rams 4-0-1 in division play. They are now 6-1-3 for the year.

Willow Glen continues league play this week. The Rams host Saratoga on Oct. 13, 3 p.m., before heading the Los Altos the following Tuesday.
