Line Break: Pioneer's Bryan Collins scored his club's only touchdown in a 20-6 loss to Piedmont Hills.

Mustangs take early lead, but fall to Piedmont Hills

Mike Wiens was off to the races. The Pioneer running back took off from his own side of the midfield stripe and raced all the way to the Piedmont Hills one-yard line.

A play later, Bryan Collins followed right guard Grant Murdock into the end zone, and the Mustangs had jumped out to a 6-0 first-quarter lead against powerful Piedmont Hills.

The Pioneer offense had spoken. But unfortunately for the Mustangs, it was promptly silenced by the Pirates who went on to nail a 20-6 victory in the second week of the season in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

Piedmont Hills anwered the Pioneer touchdown with an eight play, 65-yard touchdown drive, and the Pirates went on from there to record the victory.

But for at least a quarter, the Mustangs were on top.

The Pirates had put together a drive on their first possession of the night, but key defensive plays by G. Murdock, Sean Sarsfield, Landers Niven and Jason Murdock forced the Bucs to turn the ball over on downs. The clubs traded punts before the Mustangs went to work with 4:28 left in the period.

Greg Haskell tossed 24 yards to Sarsfield for a key first down, then Wiens took off on a 51-yard run down to the one. Collins blasted over for the touchdown, but the extra-point kick was blocked.

The Pirates came right back to take the 7-6 lead, then scored again before the half to go on top 13-6.

Piedmont scored again less than three minutes into the second half, and the two-touchdown lead proved more than enough. The Mustangs never threatened again.

Wiens finished the night as the leading ground gainer for the Mustangs with 71 yards on six carries.

Haskell completed just five of 17 passes for 78 yards, hitting Brian Davis twice for 30 yards, Kevin Gray twice for 24 yards and Sarsfield with the one pass for 24.

Davis was the leading tackler for the Mustangs with 12 tackles, and G. Murdock was in on 10, including for Piedmont losses.

J. Murdock was in on nine tackles for Pioneer, and Collins got in on eight, Niven six, Ted Lopez five and Jeff Luu and Shane Esposito four apiece.

John Rieland, Tony Esposito, Sarsfield, Sean Hallihan, Kevin Sparrer and Gray were in on three each.
