Mah wins three, Rams twoWillow Glen improves to 9-2 in division playBy Dick Sparrer Junior Cherl Mah won three times at No. 1 singles to spark the Willow Glen girls' tennis team to two wins in three tries in league play last week. The Rams whipped James Lick and Del Mar by matching 6-1 scores, but lost 5-2 to unbeaten Valley Christian. Willow Glen is now 9-2 in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. Mah started the Rams on the road to victory against Lick with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles. Chen Huynh won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, and Reyna Hernandez-Cervantes won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Willow Glen swept in doubles play. Tram Nguyen and Neda Dowlatshahi teamed for a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles, and Aubrey Schatz and Hong Le won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3. Cindy Ngo and Kelly Giambruno rolled to a win against the Comets, the first of three victories for the Willow Glen No. 2 doubles team on the week. Ngo and Giambruno won 6-0, 6-3 against Lick. The Rams capped the week with the lopsided 6-1 win over Del Mar. Mah (6-0, 6-1), Huynh (6-3, 6-4) and Hernandez-Cervantes (6-0, 6-2) were singles winners for Willow Glen. Nguyen and Dowlatshahi combined for a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles, Ngo and Giambruno won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 and Le and Schatz won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3. Mah nailed a tight 7-5, 7-5 victory at No. 1 singles and the Ngo-Giambruno team won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles, but the Rams lost the 5-2 nod to Valley Christian. The Warriors improved to 10-0 in league play. Willow Glen, now 10-3 for the year, will visit Westmont on Oct. 13 before hosting Gunderson on Oct. 15 in a pair of division matches this week.
