Prepare for flu season: shots available at area shopping centers

Willow Glen residents can avoid sniffling and sneezing their way through the upcoming holiday months by taking advantage of the flu shots now available at nearby stores.

To combat the flu season that lasts from October to December, the American Lung Association and the Visiting Nurses Association have brought influenza and pneumonia vaccinations to Longs Drug Stores, Lucky and Safeway in Willow Glen. A flu shot costs $10 and a pneumonia shot $20.

For most people, the flu simply means a miserable week or two, but it can be a life-threatening illness for others. Flu and pneumonia, the most common complication of flu, are responsible for almost 80,000 deaths in America every year.

According to Sherbeam Wright of the ALA, "The elderly and those with lung problems like asthma are especially vulnerable."

However, she urges everyone to protect themselves by getting a shot before December, the peak of the flu season.

The vaccinations are available at the following Willow Glen area stores: Oct. 11, 11-3 p.m., and Nov. 18, 2-6 p.m., at Longs at 4550 Meridian Ave; Oct. 12, 1-5 p.m., at Safeway at 1530 Hamilton Ave; Oct. 30, 10-2 p.m., at Lucky's at 3051 Meridian Ave; and Nov. 1, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., at Safeway at 2341 Winchester Blvd. For additional information, call the ALA at 998-5864 or the Flu Hotline at 800/500-2400.
