Bellarmine Prep to hold fashion show
Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose is presenting the 47th annual Mothers' Guild Scholarship Endowment Fund Fashion Show, "Back to the Future," on Nov. 9 at San Jose's Fairmont Hotel.
The day will include both a lunch show, beginning at 11 a.m., and a dinner show and dance, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Bellarmine students, mothers, faculty members and young women from Bay Area high schools will model the fashions of Caché, Eli Thomas Menswear, Eddie Bauer, Esprit, Jessica McClintock and others, as well as dance and play music.
All of the proceeds from the show go into the guild's endowment fund, which enables about 200 young men--more than 10 percent of the student body--to attend the private Catholic high school. Last year's show generated more than $211,000, and the guild has donated more than $2 million total.
Lunch reservations are $75 and dinner reservations are $125. For more information, call 408.294.9224, ext. 209.
Festival of Life event offered this month
The Heritage Network and La Oferta Review bilingual newspaper are holding a Festival de la Vida (Festival of Life) to celebrate El Dia de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead). The free event is at the La Oferta Review Gallery, 1376 N. Fourth St., on Oct. 24 from 6 to 9 p.m.
The festival will include traditional Mexican music, dance and food and a demonstration of making Day of the Dead sugar skulls. It will also feature a photography exhibit, "Xantolo Celebration of the Huasteca Region," about the celebration of the Day of the Dead by the Huasteca and Nahua Mexican indigenous communities. The exhibit runs through Nov. 20.
An Huasteca musical ensemble, Trio Tamunal, will perform with ethnomusicologist Artemio Posada, and Folklórico Nacional Mexicano will perform folklore dances. At 7 p.m., the community is invited to participate in a remembrance ceremony at the gallery's traditional ofrenda, or altar, and bring photos and mementos of departed loved ones.
Books, educational materials and sugar skulls will be on sale. For more information, call 408.436.7850.
