Rams run to varsity, frosh-soph wins
By Dick Sparrer
The Willow Glen and Pioneer cross country teams were playing "King of the Hill" last Wednesday in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
And it was the Rams coming out on top--in all divisions.
The hill was the Montgomery Hill course that the BVAL's runs out in the Evergreen area, and Ngoan Phan, Cristina Diaz and Anthony Howell led the Rams to victories.
Phan ran 17:50 to lead the boys to a 23-34 varsity win over Pioneer. The Rams also posted a win over an incomplete Del Mar squad.
"It was a very tough and important race for the boys varsity, because Pioneer is a very strong team and is the defending league champ," said Willow Glen coach Victor Santamaria. "They really came together as a team and earned themselves a much- deserved victory."
Luis Varela finished fourth in 19:08 with Kamachi Mbawa fifth in 19:13, Alex Leatherman sixth in 19:14 and Rich Folk seventh in 19:34 for the Rams, who improved to 5-0 in league competition.
Diaz, a freshman, won the girls varsity race in 21:31, a new school record. The Rams topped Pioneer 16-47 and beat an incomplete Del Mar team, pushing their record to 5-0.
Vanessa James was second in 23:21 with Kelsey Siebert third in 24:09, Jenny Cook fourth in 24:17 and Andrea Miller sixth in 25:24.
Howell ran 20:13 for a win in the boys frosh-soph race, leading the Rams past Pioneer 15-45. Craig Doleshel was second in 21:26 with Jose Cervantes third in 21:41, David Wells fourth in 21:44 and Brian Eicher fifth in 22:28. The young Rams are also 5-0.
