Ballet SJ dancers looking for housing
Last month, San Jose gained a ballet company all its own, but its dancers are having trouble making San Jose their home.
The creation of a new Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley to replace the dissolved San Jose Cleveland Ballet was announced on Sept. 15, and now 40 members of the company are dealing with the search for housing in Silicon Valley.
"We are now a resident company," said Director of Finance and Administration Christa Stiner. "Our dancers will live, train and perform in San Jose."
Stiner said that the dancers would like to find housing near downtown, where the dancers practice and perform. Most of them do not have cars, and so they are also looking for places near light rail and bus lines, she said.
Stiner said that they are very interested in the Willow Glen area, but the prices of apartments can be prohibitive.
"It's difficult to find the sort of places they'd come to expect living in Cleveland," she said. A good quality apartment can be three times as expensive here as in Cleveland, she said.
Stiner said that they have had some positive response from Hidden Willows complex on Meridian Way. She also said that the mayor's office has offered to help them find the places they need.
