Willow Glen tennis team rolls to three victoriesBy Dick Sparrer Don DuShane figured that Valley Christian looked tough in the girls' tennis race in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. He figured right. It seems that two losses to the Warriors are all that mar an otherwise perfect Willow Glen record in the circuit. And the Rams improved that impressive mark to 12-2 with three more league wins last week. Singles wins by Cherl Mah, Tina Catania, Chen Huynh and Reyna Hernandez-Cervantes sparked Willow Glen to a 7-0 win over Gunderson to close out play last week. The doubles teams of Tran Nguyen-Neda Dowlatshahi, Kelsy Giambruno-Cindy Ngo and Aubrey Schatz-Hong Le were also winners against the Grizzlies. Mah and Hernandez-Cervantes won singles matches and all three doubles teams won in a 5-2 team win over Lincoln to open the week. Mah, Huynh and Hernandez-Cervantes won in singles play, and the teams of Giambruno-Ngo and Schatz-Le were winners in a 5-2 victory over Westmont. Field Hockey Willow Glen had just a single game this week, but it was a long day for the girls' field hockey team. The Rams lost a 1-0 heartbreaker to Saratoga. The Rams and Falcons fought to a 0-0 tie in the first half, and it was more of the same in the second half until Kristy Mincey broke up the scoreless game when she scored on a penalty stroke. Willow Glen couldn't match the goal and ended up losing a tight 1-0 decision to slip to 4-1-1 in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL and to 6-2-3 for the year. Willow Glen returns to action this week when seniors Erin Booth and Nicki Garcia lead the Rams up against Los Altos on Oct. 20 and San Jose on Oct. 22 in a pair of 3 p.m. matches. The Rams visit the Eagles and host the Bulldogs.
