The Willow Glen ResidentLettersEnglish-only is the way to go I am writing to inform the Willow Glen community that I support the "English for the Children" initiative. The measure will require that all public school instruction be conducted in English. I support the measure because we are graduating students who do not speak English. This hurts these children. Their not learning English threatens the unity and prosperity of our society, which is threatened by government efforts to prevent our children from learning English in our public schools. The time to end "bilingual education" in California is now! Please support the English-only initiative in 1998.
Michael Johnson Pub's track record speaks for itself As a longtime resident of Willow Glen and a frequent visitor to Lincoln Avenue, I wish to express strong support for the request of Willow Glen Billiards and Brew to stay open until 2 a.m. The owners of Willow Glen Billiards and Brew have gone out of their way since the pub was first proposed to work with neighbors and the neighborhood association to address any concerns residents might have, and now that it is open, I have yet to read that there have been any disturbances, even minor, caused by the pub. Residents and businesses must learn to coexist peacefully, and I believe it is wrong for neighbors to anticipate trouble with a business before there is any, or for a small group of people to stop a business from doing what a majority of people want it to do: in the case of Willow Glen Billiards and Brew, to stay open later. Willow Glen cannot remain pastoral forever, as it is part of San Jose, the Bay Area's largest city. As such, residents, including those in Willow Glen, are entitled to all the amenities of a large city, including a place to gather and socialize in the evening. By staying open later, a place like Willow Glen Billiards and Brew is providing a place for people to go after evening events like concerts. I, too, am a member of the neighborhood association and hope it will solicit the opinions of all of its members on this matter before making a decision one way or another. This member is very happy with the track record of Willow Glen Billiards and Brew and feels that the owners deserve an affirmative decision from both the WGNA board and city officials in this matter.
June Cooley Correction In the story on Assemblyman Mike Honda [The Resident, Oct. 15 ], the name of Honda's aide should have been spelled Ruben Pulido.
