The Willow Glen ResidentSports BriefsRams back to league play The Willow Glen football team returns to the friendly confines of the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League after an eye-opening trip to the Mt. Hamilton Division last weekend. The Rams took their 5-0 season record to Leland for a nonleague game last Saturday and were trounced 45-6 by the powerful Chargers. The loss left the Rams 5-1 for the year, but they remain 2-0 in the division as they return to Santa Teresa play on Friday against Andrew Hill. The Falcons are 0-3 in the division after losing 27-13 to Santa Teresa last week. Hill is 1-5 for the year. Willow Glen will visit Hill for a 3:30 p.m. game on Friday. The schools' frosh-soph teams will collide at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday at Hill. Mustangs win at football again The Pioneer football team improved to 3-0 in the West Valley Division of the BVAL with a 21-0 win over James Lick last week. The Mustangs, 4-1-1 for the year, scored touchdowns in each of the first three periods to clinch the win over the Comets. Rob Basuino started Pioneer on the road to victory with a touchdown in the first quarter. Lick lined up to punt, but Basuino shot through the line, knocked a blocking back into the punter and covered the blocked punt in the end zone for a touchdown. Basuino finished the day with 12 tackles, including a quarterback sack, and a fumble recovery. Ryan Miksch scored on a 22-yard run in the second quarter, and Leigh Mayer took one in from the 14 in the third. Brian Sturges kicked all three extra points. Paul Purdy (11 tackles, one sack), Mayer (seven tackles, fumble recovery), Kevin Gelardi (six tackles, two sacks) and Ryan Sexauer (eight tackles, one sack) were other defensive leaders. Bryan Collins got in on five tackles, and Ted Lopez, Grant Murdock, and Herbert Jackson were in on four each. Spartan Hall of Fame Classic San Jose State University baseball stars of the past Rich Guardino (1974-77) and Chris Pedretti (1978-79) will be the inductees during ceremonies at the 12th annual Spartan Baseball Hall of Fame Golf Classic Oct. 24 at the Santa Clara Golf Course. The tourney begins with registration at 11 a.m., a putting contest at noon and a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The cost for the best ball scramble is $140 and includes a cart, green fees, tee prizes, lunch and dinner.
