Willow Glen is off and running.

And the Rams may not stop until they win the title in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

The Willow Glen boys' varsity cross-country team is off to a perfect start in the division season, and they need just two more notches in their running shoes to clinch the league championship.

The Rams have romped to wins over Pioneer, Oak Grove, Valley Christian, and, most recently, San Jose to run out to a 4-0 start in the league season. They'll face Hill and Lincoln on Oct. 22 at Santa Teresa Park in a three-way meet to close out the dual meet season.

"We're feeling really strong," said Willow Glen coach Mike Galindo after a lopsided win over San Jose. "We have some of the fastest guys in the league right here."

The Rams rambled to the easy win over San Jose, pushed five of the first six runners across the finish line in a 16-41 victory.

Noe Torres led the Willow Glen effort, finishing first in 17:18 over the 2.8-mile course at Alum Rock Park.

Torres led a virtual photo finish for the Rams, who finished in the pack for the top four spots.

Eyasu Kebede was second, with Chris Watkins third and Kamal Abdelbaki fourth, all in 17:18.

A San Jose runner finished fifth, but Leo Garcia came through with a sixth in 18:43.

The Willow Glen frosh-soph runners also ran to an easy win over San Jose by pushed the first eight finishers across the line. The Rams won 15-55 to even their league record at 2-2.

"They did terrific," Galindo said of the frosh-soph team.

Nick Rohwer led the Rams, finishing first in 20:09. Nick Fill was second in 20:14, with Johnny Guerriero third in 21:31.

Jason Benjamin finished fourth in 21:32, with Jeff Holt fifth in 22:03, Jon Havens sixth in 22:09, Jared Newton seventh in 22:45 and Drew Carlascio eighth in 23:11.

The Rams will run against Hill and Lincoln this week, then prepare for the BVAL finals set for Nov. 3 at Crystal Springs.

Rams win, Panthers lose

The Willow Glen and Presentation girls' volleyball teams came through with very different results last week.

The Rams upped their record to 4-3 in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League with a 15-4, 15-5, 15-13 win over James Lick. Willow Glen is now 4-4 overall this year.

The Panthers lost a tough four-game decision to Del Mar in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the BVAL. Presentation lost 15-13, 16-14, 11-15, 17-15 to slip to 5-2 in the division and to 16-7 for the year.

Bienemann scores

The Presentation girls' water polo team dropped a tough 13-11 decision to powerful Lynbrook in a key nonleague match-up last week at Lynbrook.

Cassie Bienemann poured in six goals to lead all Presentation scorers in the game. Laura DiPalermo and Jamie Hinderliter tossed in two goals apiece, and Lisa Knott and Jennifer Allen added one each.

Presentation took the early lead, but the Vikings tied it 10-10 by topping the Panthers 4-3 in the third, then snapped the tie by outscoring the Panthers 3-1 in the fourth.
