Panthers first, Rams third at beach

    Presentation reaches quarter finals

    By Dick Sparrer

The girls at Willow Glen and Presentation high schools put on their swimsuits for a trip to the beach last weekend.

But this was no relaxing trip over the hill to the Santa Cruz Beach and Boardwalk. This was a trip to the Beach Invitational girls water polo tournament at San Lorenzo Valley High.

And though the competition at the tourney was rugged indeed, the Panthers and Rams each returned home with spots in the event's top three.

Presentation won the tournament title with Willow Glen clinching a third-place finish. So well did the two teams play that they dominated the 11-member all-tournament team with five players claiming all-star status.

Kim Forston, Lindsay Fraka and Juliet Wilson of Presentation and Courtney Livak and Alicia Barreto of Willow Glen each earned all-tourney spots after sensational performances.

The Panthers clinched the title with a 7-5 win over Gunn.

The Rams nailed third overall thanks to wins over host San Lorenzo Valley 11-6 and Los Altos 8-4.

Livak and Jamie Watts pitched in three goals apiece, and Barreto added two for the Rams in the win over SLV. Allison Rice, Katie Addington and Gina Rojas also scored for Willow Glen.

The clubs were locked in a 3-3 tie after a period, but Willow Glen pulled away by outscoring SLV 4-1 in the second and 3-0 in the third.

Willow Glen, 10-5 for the year, came back with an 8-4 win over Los Altos. Livak led the charge with five goals. Barreto tossed in a pair of goals, and Rice added one.

The Rams jumped out to a commanding lead but outscoring the Eagles 3-0 in the first and 4-1 in the second.

Willow Glen is off to a 4-4 start in the Mount Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

The Rams won a pair of games last week, swamping Valley Christian 13-4 and sinking Leland 7-3.

Barreto was the scoring leader with four goals against the Chargers. Livak chipped in with two, and Rojas had one.

The Rams led 1-0 after a period and 2-1 at the half, but pulled away with two unanswered goals in the third quarter.

Livak poured in five goals, and Watts and Audra Travis added three apiece. Barreto and Rojas capped the scoring with a goal each.

    Panthers in quarters

The Presentation girls volleyball team made it to the quarterfinals of the Santa Barbara Tournament before losing a tough decision in four games to Torrey Pines.

Senior Adriana LeBaron slammed 13 kills and Katie Turley-Molony added 12, but the Panthers lost a 15-13, 16-14, 13-15, 15-13 heartbreaker to Torrey Pines.

Presentation had opened with a 2-15, 15-7, 15-5, 13-15, 15-7 win over El Toro, getting 13 kills from Sarah Nadler and 11 from Taylor Rayfield.

Turley-Molony and Nadler had 12 kills apiece in a 15-1, 15-12, 8-15, 15-5 win over Centennial of Bakersfield, and LeBaron had 10 kills and Paris Raissinia added eight in a 15-8, 15-13, 15-9 win over St. Mary's of Stockton.

The Panthers, 13-5 for the year, had whipped Prospect 15-1, 15-3, 15-1 to improve to 8-2 in Mount Hamilton Division play last week. LeBaron was tops with eight kills.

Rayfield, LeBaron and Turley-Molony led the Panthers to a 15-4, 15-4, 15-12 league win over Valley Christian earlier in the week.

    Rams slam two

The Willow Glen girls volleyball team slammed a pair of opponents last week to improve to 9-1 in the West Valley Division of the BVAL.

The Rams, 15-6 for the year, knocked off Yerba Buena 15-7, 15-5, 7-15, 15-5, then ripped past Lincoln 15-1, 15-7, 15-7.

    Netters split

Lisa Pierson and Denee Wallberg won twice at No. 3 doubles, but the Willow Glen girls tennis team could manage just a split in a couple of Santa Teresa Division matches last week.

The Rams, 8-5 in league play, lost 6-1 to Westmont to open the week. Pierson and Wallberg teamed for a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles.

Later in the week, the Rams rolled over Overfelt 5-2. Kelsey Giambruno won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Caitlin Hannon won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2, and Aubrey Schatz won 7-5, 6-1 at No. 3.

Stephanie Mansfield teamed with Erica Gonzalez for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles, and Pierson and Wallberg won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3.

    Hockey loss, tie

It wasn't a great week for the girls field hockey team at Willow Glen. The Rams suffered through a loss and a tie in the Mount Hamilton Division of the BVAL to slip to 1-4-1 in league play and to 6-5-1 for the year.

Willow Glen opened the week with a 2-1 loss to Los Gatos, despite getting a second-half goal from senior Lindsey Herauf.

The Rams came back to blank Mitty, but failed to score themselves and had to settle for a scoreless tie against the Monarchs.

Willow Glen will try to get back on the winning track this week, hosting winless Saratoga on Oct. 23 and visiting St. Francis on Oct. 25 in a couple of 3 p.m. starts.

    Buchanan scores

Kyle Buchanan tossed in a fourth-period goal, but that was all the Willow Glen boys water polo team could manage in a 15-1 loss to Mount Pleasant. The Rams slipped to 0-5 in the Mount Hamilton Division with the loss.
